fitting Windsor in pony (Cobra)?

Have '76 Cobra with (embarassing) V-6. Also have 85 Ford Truck with

5.8L Windsor. Considering losing the truck, 'cept the engine. Restoring the Cobra....

Do I keep tranny w/ engine? Will it fit?* Conversion kit, or hand made fitting parts? Source of information, how-to guide?

thanks, Joey

With a welder and a torch you can make anything fit. The 5.0 was available in that body style, so that will solve some of your problems. Just get a factory service manual and it will tell you pretty much everything you need to know. Procedures are the same between the 5.0 and 5.8. Getting a 5.8L into that Mustang will be a trial, but it can be done. Since it's taller and wider than a 5.0, a lot of things won't fit off the shelf. You'll probably have to fab your own headers, stock manifolds may not fit. You may be able to get away with street rod style block hugger headers. The hood will need to be altered. Valve cover clearance around the brake booster may be an issue. But motor mounts, transmission mounts, wiring, and plumbing will be the same as a

5.0. Use the stock factory brackets for the 5.8 and there won't be an issue there. You'll also need to beef up the brakes, suspension, and rear end to handle the additional weight and power. That will be expensive. And you may also need to up-grade the fuel lines. I don't know where you live, but emissions could be an issue. Darn emissions laws get in the way of all our fun! Your best bet would be to strip everything out of the truck to make the swap: engine, trans, wiring, computer, fuel pump, clips, screws, brackets etc. Don't sell the truck until you finish the swap.

I live in Texas, outside the ozone nonattainment areas. The 76 V-6 has two pipes leading to the back, each with their catalytic converter, before they merge to one pie. First year of cat converters. I think the other issues intimidate me more than emissions.
