Here's a list of other sites who pull in Newsgroups. *Now* will you stop the harassment of HP?

Somebody pointed out to you guys that posting to Usenet is like throwing a message in a bottle into the ocean. They were right. You have *no* control where your posts end up or where they get viewed. That is the nature of Usenet. Don't like it? Use the internet and private groups or mailing lists instead. There you have some measure of control. Not much. But you have zilch on Usenet.

As I didn't get the assurances I sought, that if I gave links people would not behave badly at these sites (couldn't be sure, I'm judging by the hysteria I've witnessed toward Horsepower) I decided not to include sites I personally frequent.

Many of these sites I found when I was viewing examples of the scripts prior to putting one on my own board. I've only included the ones in English, and those that don't require any registration to view. Some are commercial companies, some are hobby/fan sites which merely have banners and affiliate programs to help offset their hosting fees. As you can see they encompass various interests and this is merely a fraction of those out there.

I have given the direct links to the NG sections where possible, but if you get a blank, backtrack to the home page or forums and locate it that way.

Example 1: This guy has got a shitload of computer related newsgroups piped in....

I've picked a thread to give a specific example of a thread which was started in an NG, but the reply was done via that board. You'll see the NG'ers are tagged 'Guest' by the board, and for 'Registered' it says 'Not Yet'. This is what VBulletin does should Guests post, and even though he may have Guest posting turned off on the board, the Database has to tag them as something to recognise and sort the threads, so that's the logical choice. The software does it though, not the Admin, so before you condemn Christian for his duplicitous behaviour, consider whether you are perhaps jumping to conclusions, and being unduly influenced by vested interests.

You'll note there are two 'members' in that discussion. You can tell these posts originate from the board, not merely because they are 'Members' and have a flag and location, but their posts

*look* different. (Dunno whether Christian has Flags and shit on his board too, but mine is an International one and I do. The Flag thing is just another hack.)

There are 2 Usenet posters joining the discussion, and they have the '>>' quote marks in their posts. Quoting on a messageboard is much neater, they appear in boxes or between horizontal lines.

There is no mistaking which posts originate where, even if one wasn't was the sharpest tool in the box. See......

Example 2: This is a Hong Kong ex-Pat baby/parenting site.

8 NGs piped (mainly misc. and alt. )

Example 3: This one is a small Ontario ISP. Scroll down a little (3rd grouping after 'Regional Discussion') to see the NG section.

Example 4: A database design company pulling in various corresponding NG's

Example 5: A site to discuss the Atkins Diet

formatting link
Example 6: A scuba diving site

formatting link
Example 7: A Australian site discussing DVD, Divx, Audio/Video, Photography etc. 6 NG's in here

formatting link
Example 8: A gaming site (mainly RPG). Scroll down and the second section from the bottom there are 2 NG's listed.

Example 9: A satellite site

Example 10: Car Audio site. Usenet Gateway is listed at the top of the forums.

Example 11: An exam notification site.

Example 12: A Fencing site. Scroll to the bottom to 'Fencing Archives' and you'll see it. That NG hasn't had a post since September so it might be dead. Or possibly the guy has run out of space and isn't piping in anymore.

Example 13: A travel site. There are NG's in each of the sections.

formatting link
Example 14: A Fan Forum. Scroll down to the bottom section they have 11 NG's listed for Buffy, Angel, and Charmed etc.

Example 15: A bass site (as in guitars not fish). Three NG's on offer here.

I could list more but I'll be here all day, and frankly if you are not convinced yet that some of you have seriously over- reacted and harassed Christian needlessly, then you never will be. :(

I'm done.

Mack,

The only problem here is that none of the newsgroups in question have a charter written quite like ours....This is the big difference, so it is not a true apples to apples real world comparison.

Sincerely,

Bill S. CC: Bill S. BC: E.A.B.& A.

But you don't know that Bill. You are assuming.

The "Charter" here means nothing. It's a *public* newsgroup. If you wanted such control over it you made a serious error by not going for a moderated one IMO.

You can write your charter anyway you want but if it's a public newsgroup the *minute* it's set up people were always free to ignore it. I suspect you know this.

You need to drop this harassment of Christian Bill, for the sake of this NG you claim to love.

Sigh. I guess you are like the Energizer Bunny, you'll just keep on rolling till your energy is spent. :(

Word of advice. Make sure you are on a no win-no fee with your lawyer. I'd stake my house you won't win this, and I'm a very shrewd gambler.

Let it go mate. Go get drunk, kick the cat, but let it go. You are gonna give yourself an ulcer over *nothing*.

You are one stubborn fella, mister. :(
