need a key, what are my options

My 99 Mustang that I just bought only had one key with it. I didn't figure out until after I bought it that buying a key would be an expense in and of itself. One ford dealer has quoted me $125!!! I could freakin believe it. Whan a scam that it is.

Anyway, what are my options here other than going to the ripoff dealer?

Check with local locksmiths, some do have the Ford Diag ODB-II computer to program the keys, The keys can be found on eBay for $20-$30; A local locksmith cut my blank and programmed the PATS for me for $25 on my 99 Ranger when I bought it had only one key, once you have at least two keys, you can program a third or more key yourself.

There is no free way unfortunately if you have only one key, it is a scam what the dealers charge, if you bought the car at the dealer I would insist that they program a second key for just the costs of the key, check around too if you have more than one Ford dealership available; some dealers charge less esp if they think they might gain your business.

From all I have seen, the anti-theft PATS system only helps the dealer sell there outrageous programming services, a good car thief knows how to get around it anyhow!!

If you buy ANY car with keys like this, you should INSIST they provide you with a second key. If you holler long and loud, make a pest out of yourself, they will do it.

They didn't like it, but they did it for me Funny how you always get two remotes, but only one key. If you're spending 20 odd thousand on a freakind car, the SOB's can provide you with a key they get wholesale for prolly $15 or less.

I think they do this for two reasons.

1) they keep a key in case the car ever has to be repoed 2) if they keep one of the keys, they can make $125 by making you a new one.
