Re: FOLLOW-UP - problems switching from regular to synthetic oil

IMHO, it appears that synthetic, due to its makeup, is more likely to leak

> through older seals then dinosaur oil...would i be correct in assuming this?

No, synthetic cleans away the sludge. Sometimes a decayed seal won't leak because the gaps are stuffed with oil sludge. The synthetic cleans the sludge away and then it leaks.

Basically..if you're leaking. FIX THE LEAK!

Oil does not cause leaks....synthetic oil does not cause leaks...

Synthetic oil cleans much better than regular oil. Dirt acting as a "seal" is removed. That is your leak. Dirt however is not supposed to be a seal. This means, the gasket in that area is shot already anyway.

Replace whatever gaskets are leaking....

Righto...

...I work at a wally world in TLE, so I flushed the engine with about 10 quarts of pennzoil before I put in the Mobil 1, and like you said, it's not like it made new problems, it was existing problems...i just thought any layman should know that this may be an issue when they change (or get an engine flush i suppose, for that matter!)

Hey, another Wally World guy! The WW here near Woodbridge, CA just started carrying Mobil One Synthetic in 5-qt. jugs for a mere $19.05 each. I don't care for the clientele, but they DO save me serious money on M1 and Motorcraft

820-S filters.

That first shot of synthetic oil will clean more gunk out of the internals than 100 back-to-back changes using Pennzoil ever will. The first 3-4 changes using Synthetic will come out looking awful; after that, it will start looking more like light honey at each change, indicating that the inside of the engine is finally cleaned out. If you have seals that need replacement, you'll know pretty quickly, as the varnish and gunk that has kept them glued together for so long will dissolve.

A small price to pay for cooler internal temps, superior lubrication and a cleaner block.

Heh heh...don't get me started on the clientele...

"I have to wait 1 HOUR to get 4 tires put on? That's ridiculous!!!" "I don't have the money to pay for this flat repair. Can I just have it?" (That one came after he demanded we repair the flat AFTER we had already closed.) "Just put the temp plug back in! You can still change the oil!" "I don't give a **** if my car has only two lugs per wheel. You gotta do it!"

And so on and so forth.
