VIN don't match ???

I have a friend that bought a mustang. But the VIN on the title doesn't match the VIN on the left rail of the car. The title says it's a Fastback. Wrong! It's a hardtop model like the VIN on the left rail says. Both VIN's say its a 66.

Also, the car has also had the engine changed out (289 V8 for a car meant for a 6).

So, is there some bizaar reason the title number shouldn't match the car number? Is there any way I can track the VIN on the car and see where it leads? (like track the owners, if it was totaled, ect...).

Post both VIN's here, also post the VIN on the door data plate and we'll take it from there............

No. Has your friend contacted the law dogs? He does NOT want to have the appearance of complicity in the case of a stolen car with swapped ID.
