You Guys Wanna Read A Classic Story?

A few years back, when Patrick bought his '93 Cobra, I wrote a little story about it. I just ran across it while going through some old files. If a few of you want to read it, I'll post. Otherwise, then I won't.

If you have a new and entertaining slant to the old "top vs. bottom" thing, sure. Otherwise, no thanks. If I can read the entire post (quoted and reply) without scrolling, I always bottom post. I apologize if it disturbs you. __ John C. '03 Cobra Convt.

I'm confused, John? Why did he get sarcastic?

Here's the deal; when you post from "hairyratsass", I get a completely blank post, but with an attached text file that doesn't open. I've never seen this before, except for another hairyrat post you had the other night. So, there is virtually nothing to read at all. Not even posting or source headers.

*This* post, however, is normal. Different programs?

Funny how that works, either way you go, on top or in the missionary (bottom post) you're going to get scolded.

Personally, I like it on top... much easier to get down to business.

I got the whole thing... did you hold your mouth right when you opened it? ;-D

That's good, 'cuz halfway ain't gonna do it.

Possibly not. As you see by my reply there is no quoted text from his first post. I've read perhaps a million posts on Usenet since '97, and never noticed exactly this situation. Must be a Windows thing.

The third is line-by-line reply. That way you are right in the middle of things.

I like her on top, too. That way the second girl also has a warm seat all ready. As long as I don't sneeze.

BTW, what *did* he say?

Hmm, I'll look into the problem. The hairyratsaddress thing was just an old spam trap (I believe that sight is dead now) the two replies were posted from different machines here at home, though. It's weird because everything looks ok when I view them, in Mozilla and OE. I'll see if maybe the kids have changed something on the other machine. I'll lose that address and see what happens, as well. __ John C. '03 Cobra Convt.

Don't apologize! You should *always* bottom post (or inter-post like I'm doing)! :)

For whatever reason, the first one was base64 encoded:

Second one was "normal" plain-text. John must have changed something in OE between postings, but your news reader /should/ be able to handle base64 transparently.

I use an advanced newsreader called Thoth. If there is any file attached to a normal post, it automatically displays an icon for that in the upper right portion of the window. The most common instance would be binary files. In this case, clicking the icon gave me a 4k filed unrecognized by any standard Mac text program. It is probable that I could open it with AppleWorks, as it parses most Windows-based formats, but that prog is currently residing on another partition that I'm building up right now.

Thinking about it, I would bet that whatever news program you use in there has a preference perhaps for either putting text in the main post body or making it a separate attachment. In any case, I'm glad we got this confragulation worked out.

Imagine me seeing a blank post with "i don't give a hairy rat's ass" as my only clue. With my, uh, background, I could only guess I was being harpooned by a newbie.

It and its predecessors have always decoded base64 binaries, first prompting for a target folder. This was not handled that way.

John blames it on his kids. Sounds good to me.

OK, I think we have the encoding thingamajig figured out. I'll put this story in another thread.
