Just bought a 2001 QX4 with over 74,000 Miles. The "Service Engine Soon" lamp came on this morning as I was driving it at about 30mile/hr and stayed on since.
Could it be the Oxygen sensor? and how much it cost to replace?
Or somewhere that can read the codes. The price varies too much to say what it would cost where you live, call around. Otherwise you're just guessing. Remember though sometimes what the computer spits out isn't exactly what is wrong and someone familiar with the car would now how to read the results. Smart people cost more money. ;-)
I'd go to the dealer unless you know of a good shop that really knows that vehicle.
It remembers for the last 50 engine on/start/run//off cycles!
But the gas cap was just one example off how minor the item causing the light to come could be. It could be something else, only a scan will tell. The other way is to short the engine check terminals on the check connector. This will make the MIL flash the fault codes without needing a scan tool. As a previous poster has said how you interpret the codes is another matter. Take the gas cap example, it will come up as a fault in the evap system, the 1st reaction would be to change the carbon canister and clear the code. This would be a big expense to cure the user error of removing the gas cap while the engine was running. As such an abuser is likely to do it again the fault will reapppear so they will be in and out of the shop getting new carbon canisters and slagging off Nissan, when really they need a quite discussion about their dangerous and environmentally unpleasant refueling habits.
If the engine is in really big trouble like the AFM has died it goes into limp home mode and won't exceed 2800rpm.

Have a 99 pathfinder. My light came on around 32,000. Checked gas cap and other things. I went to the dealer and it about $50 to diagnose. Came out to be 2 rear oxygen sensors were bad. I knew the service manager and he said there was a service bulletin about it and had to replace the O2 sensors and reprogram the computer. That didn't cost me. He told me though that it was around $300 per sensor. I would argue with them, if it is the O2 sensors. Their was another guy who had the same problem during the same time as me and the service department did his work before the bulletin came out and he paid out of his pocket.
