Brake Light Indicator

So you are saying it is likely the light itself that is bad (low fluid) rather than a switch or wiring. Thanks I hadn't thought of that. I just thought it was a regular bulb and either it worked or didn't. I will check that out. If it is that, I don't suppose it is possible to add more liquid to it. If so, what do you put in it? Probably just have to buy another one.

What he meant was, that when the BRAKE fluid is low, the light gets triggered. When its cold enough for the brake fluid to contract, the light triggers. If you see your brake fluid is low, bring it to a mechanic and have the brake fluid flushed, refilled, and bleed.

Well, I feel like a freakin idiot. For some reason, I just read Jim's note the wrong way. At first I thought it was weird that he would be telling me the fluid in the light was low but then started thinking that he was referring to some kind of liquid display. When I read it now, I just got to laugh at myself.

Anyhow, thanks for straightening me out and I will be sure to check the BRAKE fluid.

You were right. The brake fluid was right at the min line. So, when the temp was cold enough it must have contracted enough to trigger the sensor. Now that I added fluid up to the max line, the light no longer appears.

You are not done yet. If the fluid was low enough to turn on the light, it usually means that either the brakes are almost completely worn down or there is a leak. You should check the whole brake system to find out which it is.

Thanks, I will check for leaks. The brakes aren't yet worn down to the change indicator. However, I plan on changing the pads and the fluid, etc. next month. In the meantime, I will keep a close eye on the fluid level. If it goes down, I will do something about it before Jan.
