CONSULT II

Does anyone know where I could find a used CONSULT II device?

Thanks in advance.

If you find out, let me know. I'd love to get my hands one one... or even have the ability to borrow one. Could make a roaring trade renting out such units.

What is a consult device ?

I was under the impression that (well at least over in the UK, I dont know about elsewhere), the CONSULT II, is a Nissan diagnostic tool, which checks all the engine sensor's and ECU and stuff. You can perform all sorts of neat printout's, and do Power Balances and all that. Of course, some, if not most of the monkey's that work at Nissan dealerships, can't read what the Consult II is telling them, and consequently couldn't tell a misadjusted TPS tosome lie like "That's how your gearbox is supposed to behave sir, its supposed to jump in and out of torque converter lockup while you're cruising at a steady speed".

That's at least why I want to get my hands on one of these devices - to see what faults I can find. I dont know about the OP.

I've seen units, for about £30, or $50, that can display the error codes from the engine - of course, on a 1994 UK Nissan Primera, 2.0 litre, you can attach a bit of wire, and read the error codes from the Check engine light.

But A gizmo that can actually do 90% of what the consult does, sounds excellent (if it is cheaper?).

What are they called, how much, and where from? Are they applicable to the UK market at least? I've got a feeling they're going to be pretty expensive - would be nice if I could borrow one, or rent one from somewhere.

I was hoping to buy the above (it's the cheapest package out there, that will probably do what I want), but I think the owner is on vacation, or something. His voice-mailbox is full, so you can't leave him a message, and he isn't answering his email.

I HOPE that's what it is, but if you can't get ahold of him, that's a red flag re: ordering from him. And what about tech-support if you need it? Will he respond?

I sure wouldn't risk sending him money.

There are a bunch of other Scan Tools out there, some for PCs/notebooks, some for PDAs and some are dedicated tools...just keep looking.

I've decided against obd-2.com, and am now considering

The software that comes with the scantool.net device is missing the feature that I want (logging), but they document how to talk to their hardware, and someone has written a data logging tool in perl that can be used as an example of how to talk to the hardware (and your vehicle).

The CONSULT II allows you to update the car's firmware, and you can get the latest version from the Nissan web site (for a fee, of course).
