power loss while climbing hills

Hello All, I have a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder with 61000 miles. Since last year I am noticing some power loss while driving up the hill. While driving on flat surfaces I dont see any difference..

It's an automatic? Sounds to me like it's dropping a gear to get up the hill, that's why the revs are going up. It didn't do it before becuase you were doing 75, and it was happy in the higher gear.

The hard bit is why is it only doing 60 - and on that I have no clue.

I would think that your ignition timing is off, but then your motor, I'm not sure which, is probably completely immune to that.

Recently the Service Engine Soon light came up. I retreived the diagnostic codes from the vehicle and there was only one code and it was P1135. I looked up on the internet and there are different versions/explanations for the same code. Can someone tell me exactly what the problem might be. The light disappeared after couple of days. And is this something related to the power loss the vehicle experiences while climbing slopes?

One strong possibility is the knock sensor detecting some pinking on hills and retarding the ignition to stop it, losing power. You probably don't get any pinking on the flat, that's the way pinking works. Try higher grade fuel.

It's an '01 Pathfinder so it's probably a 3.5L.

On an '01 PF with 3.5, P1135 is left side intake valve timing control.

Manual or automatic?

That would explain why the RPM goes up: the automatic downshifted.

Since he is losing power it would seem to suggest that the cam really isn't advancing rather than a faulty circuit.

well then, if u did what everyone else said then u just want a comfirmation that ur engine sucks. so get a new one. or even a new car.

It's a fine motor. It really hauls the freight and it was fun surprising BMWs at stop lights till they figured out that Nissan had a new motor.

And one more thought for the original poster: How's the oil pressure? The solinoids are driven by engine oil pressure (nice available source of 50-60 PSI hydraulics), and I suspect that if the oil pressure gets way down, the solinoids won't change the cam advance.
