Recall Notice

I just received a Recall Notice from Nissan that "on some 2000-2003 model rear Nissan, vehicles, there is a possibility that the engine might stop running while being driven if the crank position sensor fails. This may also result in the 'Service Engine Light' coming on or reduced engine power."

What is the "crank position sensor?" Where is it located? What is its purpose?

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima 3.6.

Crank sensor tells the OBDC timing information.

No. It's actually driven by the camshaft and fits on the cylinder head. It gives signals to the ECU so it can time the ignition spark and injection to the piston motion.

Actually, on the 3.5, the crank sensor is located on the bell housing for the trans. It reads the flywheel rotation. The cam sensors, which are also part of the campaign, are located on the rear end of each camshaft.
