in case this will help someone else, the 96 sentra gxe factory radio volume could not be controlled, either too loud or too low, even changed volume itself while auto was being driven.
after troubleshooting the volume control, the problem was found to be at the connector where the faceplate plugs into radio. close inspection found two bad solder joints where the connector is mounted on the faceplate. resoldered, works fine.
