Cost of brakes 97 Maxima

This sounds pretty drastic. Why were they looking at the brakes? If you had a specific complaint - noise, reduced braking, etc., then its possible you might need some of this. If everything was normal and you asked them to look just because they put on tires, then you probably do not need such drastic brake work.

Was this a Nissan dealer or a tire dealer?

Calipers - unless they are leaking and or sticking, replacing the calipers seems to be over the edge. With that many miles on the original brakes, I don't think there can be anything wrong with the calipers or it would never have gone that far on one set of pads.

At 125k, it has got to be ready for pads, but if the rotors are still fine at that mileage, pads are probably all you need. In fact, if the rotors are not gouged and scored, you might not even need to turn them, just slap on a set of new pads.

Get a second opinion. I think there is a chance this guy decided you were particularly gullible.

The factory service manual with all the diagrams and instructions you will need appears on eBay periodically for about $20.

That is a lot of miles for original pads/rotors!

I would get:

-remanufactured calipers at autozone ($45 each)

-Raybestos QuietstopQS pads from rockauto.com ($45/pair)

-Nissan rotors ($85 each) --or I have had good success with AIMCO rotors from Autozone ($30 each)

It's pretty easy to do the work yourself... just don't forget to bleed the brake lines afterward.

Wow. 125k. I had my front brake pads replaced at 55k/88k and my rear brake pads at 81k. Maybe too much city driving. I went the cheap way of Firestone ($90fr/$160re). No problems so far but they don't last as long as OEM. Usually they will try to sell me the 'premium package' which includes all new hardware. Maybe ask your dealer if you really need new calipers. Maybe you don't. Then again, at 125k, maybe you do.

No way does it need all new calipers, don't let them do this.

I though it was extremely drastic!!!! The tires were mounted by a Nissan dealer who has done work before for me. Nothing appears to be sticking or leaking and there were no noises. Just asked them to look at the brakes while the tires were off.

I agree, pads are needed at this mileage. And yes, these are the original pads. The wife is very good at braking. Nothing hard and quick. The rotors look good also, but I think I need to look at the calipers myself and possible someone else.

I will get a second opinion from another shop. Although I have found that the calipers are not that expensive, ~45.00 each for remanufactured.

YUP, 125K!! My wife is real good with her brakes as well as the clutch, on then off. I especially told her at stop signs and lights to stay off the clutch. Put it in neutral and stay on the brake. Her last Nissan never had the calipers or clutch replaced and that car went 275K. She's real good!!!

Yes, I plan on getting a second opinion on this. I suspect that liability may have something to do with doing the brakes. Or, maybe this guy needs the money and figures with the miles on the car I would bite!
