You need a scan tool to reset it. You want to know what code(s) are being set. It will likely just come back on if you don't fix the problem.

Actually, you don't need a scan tool. The procedure to read out the codes and reset the light is in the factory service manual. Here it is:

--> How to switch diagnostic test mode: NOTE:

  • It is better to count the time accurately with a clock.
  • It is impossible to switch the diagnostic mode then an accelerator pedal position sensor circuit has a malfunction.
  • Always EOM returns to diagnostic mode I after ignition is turned "off".

How to set diagnostic test mode II (self diagnostic results):

  1. Confirm that the accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch "on" and wait 3 seconds.
  2. Repeat the following procedure quickly 5 times within 5 seconds.
1) Fully depress the accelerator pedal. 2) Fully release the accelerator pedal.
  1. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it down for approx 10 seconds until the MIL starts blinking.
  2. Fully release the accelerator pedal. ECM has entered diagnostic test mode II (Self diagnostic results).

--> How to read codes:

DTC and 1st Trip DTC are indicated by the number of blinks of the MIL. If only one code is displayed, it is a DTC. If two or more codes are displayed they may be either DTCs or 1st trip DTCs.

A particular trouble code can be identified by the number of 4 digit numeral flashes. A digit zero is indicated by 10 flashes. The 1,000th digit flashes on for 0.6 seconds then off for 0.6 seconds. The 100th digit (and 10th and

1st) flashes on for 0.3 seconds then off for 0.3 seconds. Change to the next digit is indicated by the MIL being off for 1.0 seconds. Change to a new code is indicated by the MIL being off for 2.1 seconds.

A code of "0000" means no malfunction.

--> How to erase Diagnostic Test Mode II (this resets the codes and turns off the light):

  1. Set ECM into Diagnostic Test Mode II (see above).
  2. Fully depress the accelerator and hold it for more than 10 seconds. The emission related information has been erased from the backup memory in the ECM.
  3. Fully release the accelerator pedal and confirm that DTC "0000" if displayed.
  • If the battery is disconnected, the DTC will be lost from the backup memory after approx 24 hours

Thanks. This is the same procedure for my 02 Max.
