Interesting 02 sensor Situation

2001 Maxima SE Nissan Extended Warranty to 75K Miles - 5 Years

Hi,

My check engine light came on so I took my car to the local Nissan dealer. They determined that I had 2 bad 02 sensors AND the 'Front Exhaust Tube Assembly' needed replaceing. The dealer tells me that the sensors could be replace under warrantee but the tube assembly would not be covered since it's considered part of the exhause system. This is a very expensive part to replace. The part itself is $700, for a total of $1,200 to do all the work necessary. Is this something I HAVE to do - would the car be okay if I didn't replace the tube assembly? Sorry if this is a dumb question for you experts - but $1,200 is a lot of money for me.

I'd appreciate any input.

Patrick

This would be your "Y pipe". The "rear exhaust tube" is commonly called a "B pipe".

A custom, performance-oriented "Y pipe" may even be available for your year Max, I know they are for us with 4th genner's. Now's your excuse to spend to pick up a couple ponies!

Here's an idea of what's up;

Anyway, any dealer parts counter is gonna rock your world. And any decent garage can change or maybe even weld-up a bad "Y-pipe". Go elsewhere.

At the least, try ordering your stocker Y-pipe over the 'net. Try Garrand's Nissan, get a 'net discount and IIRC, free shipping for orders over $50.00USD;

How many miles on your Maxima?

I'm not sure why the y-pipe would need to be replaced... I can understand O2 sensors failing... but a y-pipe? hmm... perhaps one of the pre-cats has failed?

Find out why the y-pipe has to be replaced.

Cheers, Nirav

Do you happen to know what code was set in the computer.

This info would help me and you out quite a but, to the tune of " some of it may be covered under warranty".

Well guess what ,your the next contestant on "its covered under warranty"

The Three way catylalist and the ECM reprogramming is covered under a 8 year

80,000 mile emission warranty.

Tell your dealer to look up the TSB for this code in the ASSIST program that the technicians use, it is all listed there to correct this problem.
