loss of power/rough idle

Nov 24, 2003 5 Replies

I have a 97 Max (auto GLE with 40,000 mi) that recently seems a little sluggish at low speeds, on the highway it seems much more noticeable (60-85mph). Also I noticed the engine idles a little louder, almost sounds like a light rattle. The service engine light has not come on.

I'm not sure if these 2 issues are related, the only thing that's changed is that its much colder here in Michigan. I bought the car in Oklahoma where its spent its entire life until the past 3 months. Not sure if this matters, but I only use 93 octane gas in it, and try to avoid the oxygenated stuff. I might be able to borrow a OBDII scanner, could this help indicate the source of the problem?

thanks in advance

My advice would be to use a good injector cleaner two times with half tank of gas each can of injector cleaner goodluck. dk

if your knock sensor is down, you will lose about 15% of your power. It will turn up code 03 04 if you pull your ecu codes and it does not trigger a check engine light. It is not responsible for rough idle or rattling though. You basically noticed poor throttle response and loss of power.

VTC problem? Check out this site:

I know it covers MY's other than yours, but it might be related.

is the VTC rattle only inherent to 3rd gen Maximas? I was unable to verify this.

also, I ran the ecu test and got 05-05, no problems...could it be something in the exhaust system causing that noise??

the VTC problem ONLY affects 92-94 Maxima SE. Lotsa things can cause noise in the exhaust
