Because the ambient light is too bright. The clock dims so as to be more comfortable at night.

If you pull the clock and clip the dimmer wire it will be fully bright no matter whether your headlights are on or not. I forget which wire - but I recall learning it from

Oh, and it's definitely not too bright now when it is dark inside the cabin.

OK, for a minute I thought you understood INTERIOR lights. Yes, I did mean HEADLIGHTS.

It happens even when I put headlights on during the day -- say, when it's overcast.

Yes, same thing. When the headlights are on the interior lights come on but the clock gets dimmer. I think the fix has been called the "one-wire mod" since you're just clipping the clock dimmer wire.

Look to the right of the ignition slot on the dash, there should be a dial to turn that adjusts the brightness of the interior dash lights when the headlights are turned on. Is the clock the only thing affected? Maybe a loose wire/circuit board somewhere?

Yeah, that thumbwheel can be turned all the way to full on. If you do the wire mod then your clock will be overly bright when you're driving at night.

I've always had the thumbwheel turned all the way to full on. During the day, when the headlights are on* can't see time at all, but at night, can see. Go figure.
