406 key problems

My guess is that replacing the battery in the key destroyed the code stored in it. Presumably a Peugeot dealer can retrieve the code from your vehicle and reprogram your key.

Mike emailed me asking whether this meant he had to tow the vehicle to the dealer, taking the key and the 'card'. This is my response:

My impression is that if you know the code it can be inserted in the key by any locksmith with the necessary gear. But, if not, the dealer will have to recover the code from the engine management system. Unless he makes house calls, bringing his diagnostic gear, he will need the vehicle. You mention a card. I have a plastic code card with a picture of a key on it which may be what you mean. It may be that this is all that is needed to re-program the key. Maybe not. Why not ask the dealer?

If it's just the remote locking that isn't working, put the key in the ignition & turn it to the on position; press the remote locking button until the doors lock /indicators flash; this resynchs the central locking and key code sequence. You only need to get it to a dealer if the immobiliser isn't releasing, i.e. the engine won't turn over but the ignition appears to turn on. I guess by the mention of towing, the latter may well be the case. Martin
