My dad's Peugeot 405 "Style" diesel has recently developed a problem where it sometimes crunches when he changes gear. Sometimes when putting it into first, it is difficult, and the car will move forwards slightly when going into first. This all points to the clutch not fully disengaging, has anybody else had this or a similar problem on such a car?

The clutch plate can rust to the input shaft so that it doesn't move away from the flywheel when the clutch is depressed. Is the biting point OK or does the cable need adjusting? I used to do mine every few months as I'd lost the lock nut and the vibration slowly slackened it off. It could also be old oil. I changed to Valvoline and the gearchange improved.
Probably the clunch is used. Depending on the year it was made, you can adjust the clunch cable or not ( when the cable atomaticly adjust )
