89 Octane in 02 GP GT

Apr 10, 2004 4 Replies

Once in a while I have been putting 89 Octane in my 02 Grand Prix GT. Is this safe for the engine?? I have the 3.8 V6 (not supercharged).

Thanks

I think that 87 is recommended so it's not doing any harm.

On my 94 3.8 Trans Sport, going from 89 to 91 octane drops the knock count significantly on the OBD scanner. Going to 93 makes no more difference under normal conditions.( with 91, the count is virtually zero) It MAY help when towing the trailer.
