Central locking problem

I have a Rover 100 AscotSE.

Both the front door locks have an intermittent fault of opening and closing spasmodically taking several presses of the key fob to operate. My mechanic has looked at both locking mechanisms but cannot find a fault. The battery in both key fobs have been changed.

By chance, he now has another Rover 100 with the same fault.

Does anyone know if this is an inherent fault with the Rover 100? More importantly, I should appreciate if anyone could tell me what the fault may be and how to fix it. Replacing the locks is not an attractive solution if it may not solve the problem!

Regards

Bill
