1997 420 GSI Air con model, temp gauge works VERY sporadically (more often not working than is), heater takes an age to give out ANY heat. Water level ok and clean, and no warning lights on, so I'm suspecting the top hose thermostat, any other suggestions. The only thing I did of late (three months ago) was undo the top hose to replace the alternator, could I have disturbed something along the way, we've only just started to use the heater so the problems only just come to light. Thanks in advance.

Could have got an airlock in it.
Thanks to both you guys for the response. Tried stat first and it was stuck half open hence the problems. For reference QH had the wrong stat listed for my model (1997 R 2.0 non-turbo), turns out after a lot of back and forward mine was using the 2.0 turbo stat which is top hose mounted not in a separate stat housing. Best to take your stat with you to the shop to match up rather than trust their books/part numbers.
