'01 9-5 Aero died

Had to pick the cat up at the vets yesterday afternoon, put him into the car, climbed in, hit the key, the engine turned over but no start. All lights indicated everything was hunky-dory, no check engine light, everything appeared normal. It would occasionally hit a lick like it wanted to fire but then nothing. When I popped the hood there was a strong phonelic (sp) smell (hot electronics?), it acted like there was no fuel delivery. To that point everything was normal, just finished driving it 40 miles without a miss. At 41k miles I just called Road Side Assistance, they had a truck there in 45 minutes. The significant other gave us a ride home, the car went to the Saab garage for a fix-em-up, it will be Monday before anyone can touch it. In the mean time I'm wondering if anyone else out there in Saabland has experienced a similar malady.

Needless to say the cat wasn't too happy about the delay, the splint on his leg didn't help matters either. Please, no cat jokes, he's sensitive.

Just happened to me -- 2000 9-5 Aero.

Direct Ignition Cassette is the culprit. Repair will run about $400, unless yo'ure under warranty (which I wasn't).

I had a similar sudden-death problem in my '02 Aero, but I didn't notice the burning-plastic smell. In my case it was a dead fuel pump. The plastic smell might indicate the Direct Ignition Cassette is a more likely cause.

Same thing happened to me and the DI cassette was replaced to no avail. Turned out to be the crank sensor. Thank heavens for warranties...

Thanks to all, it was the D.I. Cassette, 15 minutes and they had it running. The tech said they definitely have a problem there - no joke.

This DI Cassette thing begins to worry me as I thik about the newer cars.

I change the ignition model four years and 60k miles ago for a used unit and havent had a peep of trouble. It was from Goldwing here in the US

You refitted a motorcycle ignition on a Saab? What year/model is your car?

But a Honda Goldwing has essentially a car engine? it's a 1.3L V6 or something of that order. Stereo speakers in the handlebars.

Yhe DI Module was a salvaged Saab Unit from a used parts distributer who happens to use the name Goldwing.
