Trunk Lid Switch?

Hey everyone. I picked up a 2004 9-3 Aero (U.S.) last Thursday and I have a question about the trunk. Right above the license plate, there is a black rubber button about 4 inches long and about an inch wide. It is parallel to the ground, right under the lip of the trunk where you'd probably grab to open the lid. It's definitely a button of some sort: when you press it, you can feel and hear the click.

When the trunk is closed, pressing the button doesn't do anything. When the trunk is open, you can hear what sounds like a locking mechanism ("ku-klunk" is the best way to describe it). Anyone know what this button is supposed to do, if anything? The manual says that pressing the unlock button on the key twice enables the "trunk lid switch." Is this button the trunk lid switch? I called the dealer and they had no idea what it was. I also called Saab USA and they didn't know either, but promised to call me back today. Still haven't heard from them.

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.
