'92 open to the world

There is a lock 'peculiarity' with early model SLs seems the doors are easy to unlock if you wiggle the key with a close fit.

Well, this was never a problem until now. Once a week someone unlocks my car and steals everything of value in it. This has happened three times now.

Any suggestions?

Don't leave anything valuable in it?

I dont think theres anything pecular with a lock cylinder that over 10 years old being easy to open. My 95 SW2 could be opened with just about anything until I replaced the worn cylinder. I bet the drivers side is way more easy to unlock this way than the passengers.

My impression of the PD where I live is that they don't give a rip, that the citizenry are more a hassle than anything. You might try your local PD and see what they suggest.

Put something cheap that looks valuable in the car and record the serial number of the item. Park the vehicle in view of a building (house, apt, etc) window if you can. Use a video camera.

If you want to carry it one step more, you can find some dye like they use at theme parks - invisible until you shine a UV light on it.

If you're feeling aggresive, let your or a friend's dog sleep in the car with the windows cracked. If you're feeling more like a victim of the game GTA and the vehicle is on your property, sit in the shadows with your weapon of choice* and wait.

  • I'm not suggesting you actually shoot anyone, but don't point the weapon at the person unless you are willing to do so. Depending on your jurisdiction, many allow the use of firearms to protect life or property. However, chasing the thief down the road with said weapon may or may not be a little much.

Set a bear trap.

I suggest you consider taking the car in to your dealership and having the lock cylinders changed.

Get a beautiful looking CD player (110 or 12vdc) and gut the inside and install about 2 sticks of 60% with an electric cap. The cap will activate when the thief plugs it in. Read in the newspaper who stole it.
