I'd have no qualms at all about buying a used Saturn. I have gotten 44 mpg out of a 2002 SL. They have a reputation for lasting many many miles, are one of the easier makes to work on if you do your own work, and also a lot of the normal wear items are very reasonable to buy. If you have your work done at the dealer, though, I feel it's a little pricey.

My personal preference would be a used SL2 over a new Saturn. Typical Saturn owners are known to take good care of their cars and keep things in good working shape. As with any used car there may be some things that are in need of repair, be prepared for that. IMHO, there is not much different in the quality of a new or old Saturn, they are made just about the same, especially the interior. If the original owner took good care of it, you can avoid price depreciation, break-in periods and that new car debugging while getting a mid to low mileage car that will be dependable.
