pardon my igrnorance......but let me ask: what's wrong with an oil bath/is a paper element better?

granted, the Stude version is more of a pain to get at than those that just sat on top of the carb.....but they all seem pretty effective - lots of goo and gorp whenever I clean them.

You could just soak it in a big bucket of kerosene when it gets all gorpy. Of course, then you have a bucket of dirty kerosene to dispose of...

I struggled with what type of air cleaner to use. Since I am using a Edelbrock 500 cfm AFB, I could not use a stock Stude air cleaner unless I swapped the top of the carb. I thought about a chrome air cleaner, but decided that would look out of place. I finally decided to try and modify a 1960's Stude oil bath air cleaner for a dry filter. No, I didn't cut up a 4bbl oil bath (altho I do have one). I used a 2bbl that I got with a '62 Cruiser engine a few years ago. I did use the 4bbl oil bath for height reference, however.

The guts of the oil bath were removed. I am using a 10" Mr. Gasket chrome 'dry' air cleaner. The bottom Mr. Gasket base will be rosette welded to the oil bath air cleaner, and the Mr. Gasket air cleaner and the top of the oil bath are aligned so the carb stud will to thru both.

You better check your hood clearance. I'm not so sure it'll fit.
