Not really, but only for lack of trying, not for lack of good tips. I took the truck to a muffler shop and the fellow said that putting duals on it would help, but after examination of the muffler and existing system, he suggested I start with the carburation end first. He said that the system looked adequate and did not feel (from feeling the exhaust as it exited the tail pipe) that the muffler was blocked. I wondered how he could tell, but he had that look of an experienced "seat of the pants" guy and with over 30 years experience, I decided to go with his suggestions rather than spend a bunch of bucks on the exhaust.

I did some digging in the parts section of the garage and located a very nice used Stromberg 2-barrell that I will put a kit in and install. The carb was purchased as a NOS unit from Studebakers West some years ago and installed on a 259 V8 for about 6 months. It was pulled when the engine went sour and saved for later use. I will try that and see if a simple carb change will help.

I have been traveling on business for the last 10 days and just haven't had the time to do anything. I will try the carb first, then move on to more expensive and time consuming things.

Thanks for asking. I will post my progress.

I have been thinking of changing out the steering gear assembly. I have so many miles on this one and a couple of years ago, I rebuilt it, rotated the pins inside the gear 90 degrees, replaced the bushings and it was better, but not great. I have looked for a replacement shaft for a long time, but have not found one that is know to be good. The rest of the steering system is great, newish King pins, good tie rod ends throughout, but the steering still has a lot of play.

I was wondering if a later steering assembly might interchange easily. I do have a NOS truck steering wheel for the later trucks so that would not be a problem. It would be nice to have an integral turn signal system instead of the clamp-on one that is on there now.

Any ideas on what to swap this one out with?

Thanks, Allen
