Power steering questions

Why not repair or replace the stock Saginaw power steering? It is a superior system IMHO.

I agree with you, but he already has most of the Bendix parts. From the pics he sent me it looks like the only things he lacks are the mount bracket for the ram and the crank pulley arrangement. Studebaker George

George That power steering ram mounting bracket seems to be hard to find because most people when they strip out a car with power steering forget to take it of the frame. It is relatively easy to make. The power steering pulley 533890 (0105-70) was the same on all 1955-58 V8 engines and this includes the Saginaw and Bendix equipped cars,so it probably will work. I am not sure of clearance problems with the supercharger. The spacer is not used on cars with the supercharger. Looking at my 58 Packard Hawk which has a Saginaw power steering. it is the following: Two 533890 pulleys without spacer closest to the engine and than the wide super charger pulley, no spacer. You do not have to have a longer bolt to the crankshaft. Use new rubber vibration damper cushions. The bolt used 537522 is 3" below the head. It appears when they adopted the Eaton (Bendix system) pump in 1959 to some of their engines ,they lined the pump pulley up in the same position.The Saginaw pump and steering gear was only used on the Hawks in 1959. All pumps prior to that were Saginaw even when they used the Bendix system in 1958. Bob Kapteyn

Yes, car originally did not have power steering. The parts he needs are the ram to frame bracket, bellcrank, and the crankshaft pulley and or spacers if needed. I have the ram bracket and the bellcrank for him but no pulleys. Studebaker George

Now I see why he wants to do it that way. Have you tried asking in the SDC forum?

If Bob K. is right then all he needs is an additional pulley for the crank. I probably have that one still on an engine in the boneyard. Studebaker George
