Wonder if it will fit

Buddy called me last night and offered up a 2007 Hemi Charger R/T that had been stolen and then set on fire.Car was destroyed but as he described it the intake manifold warped and the coil packs distorted but the rest of the engine looks good. All the computer stuff and wiring is toast.Disc brake rear.Price is right(under $1K) and my '55 Commander coupe needs a new engine.......hmmmmmmmmm.

Wouldn't it be possible to eliminate virtually all of the modern electronic stuff and possibly return the engine to be carbed?

Probably not, unless you built your own distributor drive. This engine is all computer, with a crank position sensor, an O2 sensor, an ambient temp sensor, a knock sensor, and individual coilpacks for each cylinder. Deconverting it would make for a pretty big project in itself. A new retro intake would be needed. The wiring guru's probably sell a stand alone harness for the engine to plug right into a stock computer, so it can re retrofitted into a street rod, etc. If he got the 'puter from it (or a boneyard) and a harness, it could be a neat setup. The new Hemi is pretty bulky but I live by the philosophy that "you can install anything in anything". As the engines become more available you're seeing more and more installations. Mopar Performance is offering crate motors and the wiring harnesses for retrofitting them in both the EFI mode and carburated but the prices are kinda high.

Another aftermarket outfit that specializes in the new Hemi is Hot Rod Lane; check them out:

I'd be tempted to keep the crank sensor and O2 sensors and go Megasquirt... if I didn't have a full time job already :(

BTW this month's GRM has an article on Megasquirt if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Well I went over and saw what was left.Lets just say my friend was more optomistic than I was. When I saw distorted valve covers and threw a wrench to the crank bolt and the engine wouldnt turn over I bailed on it.$500 would have bought it all but after reserching new injectors($400 a set),the cost of new alt/starter/accessories/wiring plus rebuilding the engine and trans,my guess is that it would be easier to buy a running wreck for the driveline.I know a guy who is installing a 5.7 Hemi in a 1970 Cuda and called him and he bought everything he needed for $3K. Cheaper to go that route.

I saw a Hemi in a 53 years ago. I wonder if the new one is any bigger than the old one?

Smaller.

Yeah, N8; you'd need to win the Lotto or something to have the time to even research it!

FrequentlyAskedQuestions

If you are new to MegaSquirt, there is a lot of information to digest, and much of it will seem confusing, or even contradictory. Your best bet is to read the FAQ and the manual. In general, MegaSquirt is not designed to be a 'no hassle' solution. Instead it is intended to be an educational process. As a result, a large amount of reading and study is required.
