2010 Outback

My wife's Outback started to flash check engine, brakes, cruise and traction lights yesterday. No visible defects. What could be the problem? JHad just driven through a rain shower.

There's your problem ... don't drive an Outback through a rain shower. ;-)

It could just be water in the system which will fix itself when it dries properly, but with warning lights (especially safety ones), it's best to get it looked at by an authorised repair centre where they (should) know what they're doing.

My thoughts exactly. Everyone knows the Outback is a desert-only car. No wet weather use!

You shouldn't even wash them, unless you've got some of that thar fancy new city-folk no-water wash stuff. ;-)

Yes, I've heard. That's much cheaper than taking it to the dry cleaner.

Dry cleaning the car isn't too much of a problem ... it's trying to iron it afterwards that the real difficult bit. ;-)

And sanforized, so at least it doesn't shrink when they get wet. Unlike my Opel GT, which started out as a Corvette before the first time it was washed.

Hey, I feel a little bad that we've hijacked the OP's thread. OP, are those lights still on, or did they just come on briefly and then go away?

Back in the 80's, it was even worse, you would go in with a Chevrolet Corvette, and come out with a Chevrolet Chevette.

I'd first start with getting a diagnostics scan done on it. They are relatively cheap to get done, but they are even cheaper if you buy one online that fits onto your laptop computer through a USB port. The software that controls that on the laptop is usually free too.
