The car is a 1996 Geo Metro.
Recently the spedometer broken. Soon after that (literally the same day), the 'Service Engine Soon' light came on. Would a broken spedometer cause that?
Thanks.

It could if the engine computer needs vehicle speed, such as to control a lockup torque convertor on an automatic transmission.
It's probably not the speedometer that broke, but the vehicle speed sensor that provides its input. The ECM needs this input to control other engine functions, therefore the Service Engine Soon light when it fails.
