Cause for squeaking windshield wiper?

My windshield wipers tend to squeak a lot in conditions such as light rain, stop and go traffic. Windshield cleaner fluid will only help a little for a short time. Even replacing the wipers only stops the squeaking for a month or two. What could be the cause? How can I fix it?

Do you replace the rubber part (refill) or the entire arm? Is your windshield pitted due to age, dusty driving conditions?

Find a different place to park?

Lots of times it is stuff off trees or from a smoke stack that causes it.

Try cleaning the rubber blade with vinegar. If it was OK before that might do it.If its always been squeaky then the angle of the blade on the window may be off. It may be pushing the blade instead of pulling it across. Be careful about bending stuff, but watch it closely to see if you can improve the angle. Sometimes you just have to buy a new blade/arm assembly.

i had an exasperating problem like that 14 years ago. after much head scratching it turned out that the bush that the pivot turns in had become dry and needed lubing. all i had to do was take the wiper arm off, lift up the rubber boot that sealed the pivot and put a drop of oil on it.

I forgot to mention that I have replaced the wiper (including the arm) a few times using different brands. I have cleaned the windshield, with soap and water, with windex, windshield cleaner fluid.

A freind had this problem with his new '89 Cougar. Huge wipers, always chattered or squeaked. The dealer replaced most of the wiper mechanism but, finally, an old mechanic suggested putting a few drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid in the windshield cleaner fluid. It worked like a charm.

I have also used that trick. Another problem may be road film and can be removed by shaking a carbonated drink and letting it spray on the windshield with the wipers running. Rain-X makes a wiper fluid and, an additive for other fluids that I am now using successfully. It seems to keep the blades running smoothly and keeps the glass dry while driving in light to moderate rain using only the intermittent wiper cycle. If the wiper blades are chattering, that can many times be remedied by using a small adjustable wrench (smooth jaws or taped jaws to prevent marring finish) to slightly twist the arm so that the blade edge properly flips as the wiper changes directions. If there is a problem with the wipers lifting from the glass leaving part of it unwiped at highway speed, this may be because the springs weaken a bit as the are used and age. Many of the arms can be bent slightly to increase the arch and add a small amouint of pressure to hold it on the glass surface. On some arms, it is possible to increase the wiper load by bending the tab to which the spring is attached. Buying a new blade is no guarantee you won't need to tweak it a bit to get best performance. Lastly, the blade itself must be a good quality blade in good condition. The blade edge can be maintaind in good condition extending it's useful life by useing white vinegar to occasionally clean it or, one of the commercial products. Do not run the blade over frozen or frosted glass unless you are wiling to frequently replace the blades - the ice crystals can act just like dirt or little knives to abrade the smooth edge from the blade making it near useless for wiping in short order (my wife is the worlds worst about this as she refuses to scrape the ice).
