drum brake, unfamiliar hardware; how to remove?

('04 Cavalier, rear brakes) Instead of the since-God-was-a-boy hold-down spring/pin/cup system, these brakes have a single large, sort of 'W' shaped spring, spanning the two shoes, and passing over a half-round retainer at the base. Here's a picture (set of 2):

Question is, how to get the shoes off?

(OP) Duh - they just pop out of the shoes. I thought they'd be hooked or something. Time will tell how easily they go back in.

Do you mean you weren't even injured taking the spring off? I thought that was to be expected.
