Is permatex 2a ok? I used it and just smeared it on the threads and shaft with my hands. I let it air dry a few minutes first.

My manual said to use a non hardenign sealant.
I have had success with both RTV and brush-on teflon. HTH, Ben
When a teflon paste fails to seal a bolt, I've been able to get them to seal with Permatex Aviation gasket sealer, typically available at your neighborhood auto parts store.
