('99 Cavalier) Replacing rear shock. I can't get the lock nut on the new one tightened down enough - the shaft starts turning. I'm using big pliers to hold the flattened end on the shaft. (I'm afraid that vice-grips will just chew up the end, and eventually destroy it. Actually, I'm pretty sure that will happen.) So, ...
- Could I use a regular (non-lock) nut, with Loctite?
- Or do I need to get an impact wrench?

I bought a special tool to do this.
I would not, however, hesitate to try an impact wrench and see if you could pull it down that way.
I recall seeing a socket head called a "clutch" or "butterfly" head that might fit over the slot end nicely. I could be wrong about the clutch name, but they make drivers for butterfly nuts that might work for this.
You might check in the rack of a Sears store for some ideas.

I had the local NAPA place order mine. It wasnt too expensive, but I would have NEVER been able to get that shock out without it.
