I don't remember much about this car, had one about 20 years ago, can't even remember if it has a separate voltage regulator... however I would suspect a loose ground somewhere, either at the regulator or on the motor,, check all your straps, check the regulator, ( if you can find it, would be on the firewall or fender) make sure it is tight to the body also... If the regulator isn't grounded properly you will get these kinds of surges as a loose connection makes and breaks.

Also try rec.auto.makers.chrysler, bunch of real gear heads hang out there.

It has an external regulator that is a bit problem prone. Also check the brushes on the alternator. They can be checked and replaced without total dissassembly - and on many cars without removal of the alt.
