2002 Echo...trunk issue

My trunk mysteriously won't open. When i pull the lever i can tell that something is not catching and when I use my key i get the same feeling of the latch moving but whatever mechanism opens the trunk isn't catching. My husband is going to take the back seat off tonight (if we can figure out how) and see if he can fix the issue by getting into the trunk that way. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this, or how to fix it???

thanks for any input you can provide!! :)

If the trunk key slot is oriented horizontally, then the interior release is disabled. To open, you need the master key (not valet key) to turn the key clockwise to the vertical position, then open normally.

I know about the valet key, that can't be the issue because i lost the valet key about 3 months after i bought the car.... . something on the inside is not working.

How is the trunk lock key slot oriented?

So does that mean this bottom end car doesn't have an inside the trunk emergency release?

Thanks for all the replies that you have given.... The key turns freely all the way, I feel it trying to catch on something but nothing happens.

The only thing that is different is that now my trunk is clean. I just cleaned all the crap out of my car because I was looking to get something bigger, maybe a rav-4... I have two greyhounds and an echo doesn't cut it, my husband is tired of using the Accord. I didn't realize until we got back from the Toyota dealership that the trunk wouldn't open. My husband has a theory that they messed with it when they looked at it for trade in value, I think it is an unfortunate coincidence. Either way, I can't get into it. The seat didn't seem to have any place that it would come out.... Does anyone have any clue how to get it out without destroying the car???

Thanks!!

no, it DOES have one. are you inside the trunk? the answer below is accurate. otherwise the latch is broken. the valet key is used to lock stuff in the trunk, allow the car to be driven, but to disallow access to the trunk. sammm

I am referring to the interior release in the passenger compartment. I do not know if it has a release inside the trunk.

The rear seat is generally held in place 2 different ways. If no bolts are visible below the seat bottom cushion, then it is held in place with springs. To release a seat bottom cushion that is held in place with springs, push the cushion down towards the floor and back towards the rear of the car at the same time to disengage the cushion from the springs. It is easier if you push both the left and right sides of the cushion at the same time, and you will have to push pretty hard, almost completely compressing the cushion. Once the bottom is out, the backrest is usually held in place with 2 bolts that are visible when the bottom is removed. Remove the bolts and lift up towards the roof to remove the seat back.

There is a tab on the lock cylinder, and it sounds like it is disengaged from the latch.
