22r Carb: AAP help needed

Howdy:

I have an 86 2wd, 5-speed Pickup with a 22r. I am replacing the AAP (auxiliary acceleration pump)diaphram. The new Toyota diaphram that I bought is merely the rubber diaphram with a round metal insert in its center. The diaphram that I removed from my truck has a 3-inch rod attached to the center of the diaphram which enters a bore in the choke housing. I was certainly surprised to see this rod attached to the diaphram because my Toyota shop manual shows no such rod and the Toyota replacement diaphram that I bought has no rod attached to it. I used the my VIN to buy the part so I am fairly certain that I don't have the wrong part number.

The part I removed from the carb looks exactly like what is called a "choke pull-off" in the Schucks catalog. Is a "choke pull-off" just another name for an AAP? Here's a link to a picture:

'5&ptset=B Why would one have a rod and the other, not? Does it matter? Needless to say, I'm a bit befuddled. I am the second owner of the truck, so I guess its possible that the previous owner installed an aftermarket "choke pull-off."

Any help is appreciated.

Well, never mix a few beers and carb work. . . . I just realized that I was actually removing the "choke breaker" (as it is called in the Toyota shop manual) diaphram and not the AAP diaphram. The choke breaker is to the rear of the carb on the same side as the AAP, near the choke heater. Here is a link to a pic of it:

I hope the link works. The AAP is scratched out on the link and the choke breaker is circled.

Anyway, the choke breaker diaphram DOES have a rod attached to it. When I removed the diaphram there was some resistance on the rod as I pulled it from its bore in the choke housing. I am concerned that the end of the rod my have been attached to some linkage inside the choke housing. There is a grovved ring on the end of the rod that looks like a circlip may have attached to it. When I replace the diaphram it feels loose in the bore. I can't imagine that the rod that is attched to the diaphram would serve any purpose unless it was physically attached to something on the other end.

I know this is a long shot, but has anyone had experience removing the choke breaker? Is it OK to simply pull it out and replace it by pushing it back in without taking apart the carb. Or in doing so have I disconnected the rod from some linkage inside the carb that I can't see. Toyota doesn't even seem to sell the choke breaker diaphram; but you can purchase the entire top of the carb (the air horn assembly) for over $600. Obviously not an option. It's not even featured in the exploded diagram of the carb in the manual.

Any help from a 22r carb guru is most appreciated. Thanks.
