Check engine light

I have 2001 Prism. This morning I noticed that the check engine light was on. We have had exceptionally hot, humid weather the last few days (the remnants of hurricane Dennis). I took it in to VIP Auto this afternoon and they put the scanner on the car. It indicated a code 496



- evaporative system problem. Another car at the same shop had the same problem and several other people there also had the check engine light. Is it possible that the weather had anything to do with this?

The Evaporative Emissions Control System - P0440 Codes (440 thru 460) are the ones you will get if the fuel cap is not secured. There can be other causes of these codes, but the gas cap is the most common, and the other choices are that the hoses have holes in them -- which is not very likely.

The 400 Series numbers stop at 485, are you sure you didn't have a P0456? You can go to your favorite search engine and search on "OBD II" and find a wealth of information.
