Corolla 2001 Problem. Can you help?

My 2001 Corolla LE has 63000 miles on it, and upon accelerating on the on ramp of the freeway, the Engine light sometimes come on. My OBDII says it is a P0171, which is lean fuel. The problem is intermittent and I can get it to clear with my OBDII. But, the next day when the conditions mentioned above occurs, then it comes back as a latched illuminate engine light. Does anyone out there have a similar problem and what did you do to get it fixed?

Start with changing your fuel filter. Especially when the problem shows up with acceleration when the engine require a lot of fuel. The fuel filter may be plugged up.

Also check if you have air/vacuum leaks that will result in extra air getting into the engine or the computer misreading air pressure. With today's detergent gas I doubt the fuel injectors are plugged. And don't rush out to buy new oxygen sensors.

The marketing folks will tell you just about nothin' need replacin' but items like fuel filter, transmission filter and the like benefit from a

15000 mile interval.

Good advice. Also check for cracks or leaks in the air intake between the air flow sensor and the throttle body. To do this properly, remove the pipe and inspect. An O2 sensor at that mileage would be a last resort unless someone used caulk or FIPG that wasn't O2 sensor safe.
