Engine revving at startup

Hi,

When I startup my 2004 Toyota Camry, especially when the engine is cold, it goes up to 2200 rpm for some 10 seconds. Then it goes to

1600-1400. After a few minutes of driving, it seems to idle at 700-800 rpm or so, but even slight acceleration is always at 1500-1800.

High idle rpm is always slightly different, and it seems to be computer-controlled: all the rpms seem to be multiples of 100 or even

200 (i.e. is goes sharply from 2200 to 1800, then to 1600 after a minute, without gradual decrease). Idling for a few minutes doesn't heat it through: it only goes to the 800rpm after a few minutes of actual driving, not idling.

Does anyone else have similar effects? Is it normal? I suspect that the engine computer(s) does it, but going up to 2200 rpm seems excessive to me.

Any suggestions? Is it a problem to be concerned with?

Thanks, Sergiy

The cold idle speed sounds a little high. Have someone check the idle air control valve.

Mine does this if its VERY cold out (-10 centigrade or lower) but otherwise not. Different engine thought. Maybe a check of the coolant temp sensor too in case its thinking its really cold.
