The fasteners have a ribbed post that presses into holes in the metal ribs of the lid. There are special tools for removing the things, but you can improvise with two flat butter knives, spatulas or something similar. Put one "tool" under each side of the fastener, and carefully pry it out. Sometimes, the fastener's ribbed post gets mangled a bit, but they're cheap, and you can get them either from a dealer, or an auto parts store.

Depends on which type. If they are flat, you can pry them out with the claw side of a hammer (CAREFULLY!!!!!! Don't bend the metal!!!). Or, go buy a tool that does just this.

If they have a hole in the center, there is a 'button' in the hole. Push it in gently with something (actually, just pressing with your finger usually works) until it POPS! and then pull it out. Then, psuh from the bottom until the plastic pin is protruding from the top and whe you reinstall it, push it in and press the 'button'.

If you have the flat top type, don't worry. You can get replacements at a hardware store.

the black fasteners are about 3/4 inch in diameter. they are different from the kind where you pry center part up to release.

the middle part is round and there are two small depressions that i tried to grasp with visegrips.

i tried to put two knives under to try to pry up to put claw hammer under, but didn't work.

any other ideas ?

If the fastener does not have a button in the center, then the easiest way to remove the fastener is with a trim removal tool, which looks like a weed-puller or wide screwdriver with a rounded notch in the center. The notch fits under the fastener, allowing you to pop it off.
