That river looks like a picture-perfect trout stream. I've stopped to fish a couple of times but never had any luck. If you ever saw a Japanese guy in a suit fishing on the side of the road along that river, that would have been moi!

There are a lot of people in Illinois that are wondering the same thing about the Illinois Tollway Authority. Originally the toll roads were supposed to have been paid for by 1975 and the roads made part of the regular Illinois highway system and the Tollway Authority abolished. That's been at least 30 years now. Instead of eliminiating the tolls they just came up with a flashier way to pay called I-pass.

Actually, that's wrong, particularly since I work with an 84 year old guy who absorbs, analyzes and uses so much information that it's scary. But I know for a fact that dbu has little ability to absorb large amounts of information that are right in front of his face. So, I knew he would never make the connection between the new right-on-red rules and the particular point in history when more states adopted those rules. The reason was as obvious as the mushroom cloud over Hiroshima.

There *IS* only one: You're on a 4 lane road which has traffic lights. Maybe it's a busy commercial strip. It is NOT a limited access highway. You're in the right lane, approaching a light, but you're not turning. Two conditions exist:

- You see in your mirror that at least one car has its right turn signal on.

- There's room in the left lane, so you move over. Now, that car behind you can make a right. There may be others behind that one which you couldn't see.

You have helped others save fuel and time.

There is another solution. Pull right up to the intesection, hugging the left line. Then vehicles wanting to turn right, depending on their size, can get around your vehicle.

Something else that you LIEbrawls continue, after, what, SIXTY ONE effing years, to bitch, kvetch and moan about. You just don't understand that to make the omelet of peace, one has to break a few eggs.

I'm not bitching and moaning about anything. I'm just wondering if dbu can recall when and why right-on-red became more widespread. It's simply a matter of curiosity. Do you remember?

That may work on some roads, but not all, especially if there's a curb and the thing behind you is a fat SUV, or an old fart with bad eyes who can't judge width.

Generally speaking it applies to city streets also. Slow traffic to the right fast or passing traffic in the left lane. You need to get a copy of your state drivers examination handbook and go over the rules and regulations. It also might be wise for you to take a drivers refresher course.

Regardless, it's irrelevant to the situation I've described. When the light's red, everybody's slow. Or stopped.
