OT: For Cathy F

I've watched public education go down the tubes since 1962, when we got hit with the Baltimore decision. (One of these days, it will become as infamous in the history of bad Supreme Court descisions as the Dred Scott decision or Plessy vs Ferguson or Roe vs Wade.) What we need to do is ban the NEA from having any further effect on education and ban them from being 'the teacher's union'. The only way to do that is to close ALL of the public schools.

NEA opposes home schooling. Why? From what I've seen, most home schooled kids are smarter than the public school kids. But they don't have control over them.

NEA opposes charter schools. Why? Because it show that their efforts to improve public schools are in most cases an abject failure. It also represents a loss of their control.

So I've come to the conclusion that the NEA is if not outright loyal to the Communist Party of the USA, at least a fellow traveler, aka pinko, and should be treated as such because like the Communist Party, the NEA is about taking control away from parents and family and putting it in the hands of apparatchniks.

Hello? The Soviet Union collapsed, and you want to remake the Worker's Paradise over here? Get a clue. Buy a vowel. Call Vanna White.

Well Mike, you would be HALF right.

Grades K-4 were spent in the Chicago Public School district.

After that, I spent in schools in towns, only one over about 10,000, including the only town that is so Communist (they think they're Democrat) that they have a May Day parade.

Charles of Schaumburg.

OMG - did they have a sinful Maypole, & did they leave evil baskets of goodies on friends' doorsteps?

Cathy

Nope, they didn't have a Maypole, this was celebrating the modern May Day not the ancient one. I'm surprised the town flag didn't show the hammer and scycle.

Charles of Schaumburg

My dad used to be director of industrial relations (personnel) for the Mead Corporation. He said the only thing a college education told him....was the grad had the ability to learn...

What the f*ck happened to you? Thalidomide?

Hey, he was not the average sort of Kindergartener. ;-) (If he really did just turn 50, would be 5 yrs. old in '62, & apparently demanding to say his prayers out loud, in his classroom.)

Cathy

You're just running away from the question, Name some types of people better able to evaluate teachers for competence in the field than other teachers and, to a lesser extent, administrators. Not unlike Medicine and law, peer review is effective for program and performance improvement.

Chuck's bitch is the bitch of the ignorant -- Teachers do not decide what is to be taught, that is the domain of the state and local school board, teachers decide how to deliver the curriculum to students in a manner that the student can assimilate.

"Florida -- God's waiting room"

BTW... "who", not "that".

Cathy

From what I saw in 1991, it no longer even indicated that by then.

Charles of Schaumburg

LOL! YEah, I was referring to Political Correctness! Gald to see that you're probaly not one of them, and have your mind right (to steal from Paul Newman...)in thinking PC was Personal Computer ;) THAT kind of PC teaching is a GOOD thing!

Well, I was being a *little* facetious, Cath. Of course, Socail Studies, Science, Music, Art, etc should be taught, but all with as little "Indoctrination" as possible.

Slippery Slope. When does stating your position on a topic stop being an Opinion and start being *foisting* an opinion on students? Listen to Limbaugh, or Beck, if you can stand it! ;) They give PLENTY of examples of teachers who cross the line from imparting knowledge to indoctrinating kids! You WILL believe this, or you will fail! Rush even has High School and College students calling into his show and telling stories of this happening.

And as you say, MS and HS are when we start departing from the rote and begin teaching the Thought Process. Unfortunately, some carry it a little too far and turn it into brainwashing. And this comes from BOTH sides, but more often than not, it's the Ultra-Liberals who do it the most.

Even though I went to school with the Nuns, the only indoctrination I received was in the Religion class...and that wore off rapidly. Everything else was pretty straightforward. I consider myself lucky!

Except recent study(ies?) - heard only bits & pieces the other day - are indicating that in some situations at least, no real increase in learning taking place w/PCs in school. Of course, like virtually anything, there are a slew of variables involved, & pros & cons.

Cathy

A LOT has happened, re: curriculum/standards in the last 10 years.

Cathy

>

Simple: during a discussion on the topic at hand, if students ask what your position is, you tell them. With the caveat that this is solely your own opinion. Clearly stated as such. OTOH, you may respond that you choose not to tell them - that a person has the right to keep it to him/herself.

Cathy

Listen to

The present system is effective?

Then why is our education system damned near the bottom?

ANYBODY could do a better job at educating kids, than the present government system!

Florida Gods Country....

>

It isn't 'off the wall'....its the truth and you can't respond to Charles.

Education in America sucks....and you are part of the problem.

It sure shows up in the end product.

You people are doing a TERRIBLE job!
