The draft board was closed down a month before my 18th birthday, so I never had to sign up. I was already rejected by the Coasties anyway. And when they started up registration, they only went back to 1960.

Both my brother and I were drafted.
My draft notice arrived while I was in Navy Boot at Great Lakes in
1961.My brother was drafted into the Army in 1965. He spent his time working in an Army Hospital in Washington State. He watched the guys coming back all shot up from the war.
Great Lakes was the next stop south on the train that I took to work from Chicago of a morning for almost a year. One of my co-workers is 55 now and started his service at Great Lakes, too. That's how I know about 'Coasties'.

Our boot liberty gave us a choice of north or south to Chicago. I chose to go down to Chicago.

Botta was deployed to Afghanistan for about seven months in 2002. He then had three deployments to Iraq - about a month in 2003, three months in 2004 and 15 days later that year.
Army spokeswoman Maj. Cheryl Phillips noted that Army Reserve units deploy for 12 consecutive months, and that Botta had only accumulated about 10 nonconsecutive months of deployment. She also noted that Botta was under an eight-year service contract.
