Richard Nixon was responsible for all of those inititiatives.

Don't think so! Wage and Price controls were used during WWII and probably during the depression years.

I believe it was LBJ that started most of the big societal giveaways including food stamps.

Indeed wage and price controls were in effect during WWII as was rationing and the budget be dammed. The federal budget was so out of balance during the war inflation rose 125% by the time the war was over. A car that sold in 1941 for $700 was $1,800 in 1947 and it was the same car in most instances. When one house is on fire one does not worry about the water bill. ;)
