Prism preventative maintenance

I plan to keep my 2001 Prism for many years to come. Some of the things that have been done are: Replaced the serpentine belt, flushed the cooling system, flushed the transmission, new battery, new tires all around, front brakes replaced plus regular oil and filter changes every

3000 to 4000 miles. What else should I consider doing? Mileage is about 46,000.

Hopefully, you got a 4-wheel alignment when the new tires were installed to prolong the life of the tires. Also, I recommend inflating the tires about

4 PSI above what is listed on the driver's door frame to prolong the life of the tires.

If the car has AC, regular use will keep the seals lubricated and less prone to refrigerant leak.

At 60,000 miles or whatever interval is listed in your owner's manual, replace the spark plugs with OEM plugs.

Check your engine air filter. If you cannot see light when you shine a light from behind, replace it.

Get some battery terminal protectant at your local auto parts stores and coat the battery terminals and clamps to keep acid buildup.

Get some touch-up paint and touch up chips and scratches as soon as possible.

Keep the car washed and waxed, especially in the winter. I once did a study of salt and sand application in New England, and the guys at the VT DOT in White River Junction told me that they apply an average of 10 tons of salt and 10 tons of sand per lane per mile per year.

In the late fall, get some aerosol Lock-Ease and spray some into the lock cylinders to keep them from freezing.

Also in the late fall, spray some silicone spray on the rubber door seals to keep the doors from freezing.

Get some spray lithium grease and spray the door hinges and door check once or twice a year.

Replace the brake fluid, change the differential fluid(at least I did on my 96), drain and fill the transmission fluid after 10 to 15K or so.Keep battery clean. Check Ray's message for other things to do. I also keep the tire pressure around 35 psi.
