RAV4 ECU

I got a new RAV4 a year ago. Its the European 2.2 Diesel. The fuel consumption was poor initially, I complained, and the garage did something & it improved. The cars performance went down, however. A year later I find that the fuel consumption is getting worse, and the performance is still down. Took it in for its 15000Km service, and asked for them to "tune the motor". Response was the ECU does this and you don't tune cars anymore. Fine, but I'd like the performance back to where it was initially. Presumably they tweaked an ECU parameter the first time I complained about the fuel consumption, is there anyway to reset the ECU to "Default" values ? Something I can do myself ?

Any help appreciated.

ECU? there are no spark retardation in a diesel engine? You tune a diesel engine by getting a diesel injector service.

If you want to clear memory from the ECU, you may try disconnecting the battery for a while. Not sure, but worth a try.

Have the timing checked. It is possible that they retarded it some last time they worked on it. To advance or retard timing on a diesel, you usually have to physically move the injector pump similar to a distributor for an ignition system on a gas engine.

By advancing the timing on a diesel a bit, you can usually get some performance increases, somewhat harder starting, and idle. Retardation does the opposite of course.

Check the engine air cleaner on the vehicle. Replace it if it is dirty. That is a critical component on a diesel that uses far more air than a gas engine.
