The article you posted indicated the people bringing the suit were in fact on state land - "Morales, said he and his father believed at the time that they were hunting on state land - which has since been confirmed by the Cochise County's Sheriff's Department."
So it seems Roger Barnett was threating to shoot people who were on public (state) land. I don't think this is legal and I don't think it should be legal (to many chances for mistakes). Using a gun to protect yourself is one thing, using it to intimidate people you don't like is another and is not acceptable. No where do I see it mentioned that Morales or his family threaten Mr. Barnett. I can't see any justification for Mr Barnett pointing a gun at them. If they were close to his land, I think a simple request/reminder to stay off of this property was in order. If they refused, then he should have called the Sheriff's office.
If there was history not provided in the article, you should've included it in your original post.
As far as your use of the word "immigrants":
"The families, American citizens, have not asked for specific damages in the suit filed Friday in Cochise County Superior Court against Roger Barnett, but they have notified the court that they want a jury trial and will seek damages in excess of $200,000."
That crushes your original claim that they were illegals, unless in the author of the article is wrong. If you believe the author is wrong, I challenge you to contact him via one of these means and report back to us about your conversation.

So becasue he has a gripe with the INS / US Governement in general, he has the right to threaten to shoot Amaerican Citizens on Public Land? Is that something you think is reasonable?
OK, I get it. Illegal aliens are crashing the US border and people are mad as hell. They have my sympathy and I'll support anything that approaches a workable solution. However, I won't support some guy threatening to shoot American Citizens on Public Land. Do you? That is what your original artuicle described....
Do you have any reason NOT to believe the Cochise County Sheriff's Department?
"Morales, said he and his father believed at the time that they were hunting on state land - which has since been confirmed by the Cochise County's Sheriff's Department."
Only one article matters: The one you offered in your original post.
This is not about issue discussed in the article. This is about your defective presentation of the subject. You tried to dig yourself out of your hole by suggesting that other people do further research to repair your mistake. You should've presented all the pertinent information to begin with.
I did not see anything in the article that mentioned that the Morales party threatening to shoot Barnett. I undertand that this does happen, but since Morales and his party were US citizens, why would they threaten Barnett if they believed they were on public land? Where is the motive? It seem more likely that Barnett over reacted and threaten innocent US citizens becasue they "looked" like illegal aliens. This is the danger of making assumptions based on appearance, you can be wrong.
